Why should you do a chemical peel?

The purpose of a chemical peel treatment is to remove surface proteins to help promote epidermal cell turnover and fibroblast activity in the dermal layer. When you remove the dead skin cells on the top layers of your epidermis your skin will be brighter, healthier and hydrated. Chemical peels can address many skin concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation and dryness. There are many peels on the market, however, it can be difficult to choose the one that will best suit your needs. Your skincare professional is the best person to ask advice on how to achieve the results you are seeking.

What Makes Circadia’s DermaFrost peel so different from most of the peels out there?

Since the carrier of the peel is ethanol, this allows the ingredients in the peel to be driven deeper into the epidermal layers. This boosts cell turnover and fibroblast activity at the dermal layer.  Unlike the gel-based peels, the ethanol-based peels, like the Dermafrost 12.5% Salicylic Acid does not need to be neutralized. They are self-neutralizing.  This cuts down on treatment time. The Dermafrost 12.5% Salicylic Acid peel is great for a Grade 1 acne. It will help clear acne, breakdown oil and leave the skin bright and fresh. Remember that with ethanol peels there can be a significant amount of peeling, there will be downtime and specific home care products and instructions that must be followed to ensure that your skin heals correctly. You can expect 3-8 days of peeling when you use an ethanol-based peel. This just depends on the number of layers you apply to the skin. You can apply 1-3 layers but no more than 3 layers with the ethanol-based peels. Always wear your SPF with these peels.

Hydrating Lactic Acid Medi Peel – $150

This moderately aggressive treatment is a mild AHA acid that is derived from milk. A much weaker acid than glycolic acid, lactic acid is best known as an acid peel for the removal of sun spots, hyperpigmentation, liver spots and other skin discolorations. A Lactic Acid peel is also recommended for the reduction of Rosacea as it is the mildest of AHA peels. Cosmeceuticals are then applied to supplement the skin and to assist in correcting specific conditions such pigmentation and fine lines.

How can a lactic acid peel benefit your skin?

A chemical peel works by using a chemical — in this case, lactic acid — on bare skin. It removes the top layer of skin (epidermis). Some stronger formulas may also target the middle layers of skin (dermis).

Despite the name, your skin doesn’t noticeably “peel” off. What is noticeable, though, are the effects underneath the removed epidermis: smoother and brighter skin.

Lactic acid is specifically used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, and other factors that contribute to a dull and uneven complexion. Other benefits of AHAs like lactic acid include improved skin tone and reduced pore appearance.

However, unlike AHAs such as glycolic acid, lactic acid is a bit milder. This makes a lactic acid peel a better choice for sensitive skin. Lactic acid may also be an option if you’ve tried another AHA in the past and found the product too strong.

Are side effects possible?

Despite the milder nature of lactic acid, it’s still considered a powerful AHA.

Its “peeling” effects will make your skin more vulnerable to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, so sunscreen is key. Make sure you apply sunscreen every morning and reapply as needed throughout the day.

Over time, unprotected sun exposure can lead to more age spots and scarring. It may even increase your risk for skin cancer.

What Makes Circadia’s Gel based peels so different from most of the peels out there?

The gel based peels are designed to lay on the surface of the skin. The gel based peels are gentle on the skin and are not as irritating to the skin. Since the gel-based peels, like the Alpha/Beta peels, are designed to stay on the surface of the skin and do not penetrate the epidermis as deeply. The result is fresh glowing skin with little to no downtime and little to no peeling.  With the combination of Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid in the Alpha/Beta 30/10, your skin will be left clear, bright, hydrated and glowing. The gel base peels do need to be neutralized to ensure the ingredients are no longer active on the skin. You can schedule a treatment and leave the spa looking refreshed and go on with your daily routines. Just remember to wear your SPF!
